A 68-year-old Las Vegas man who preyed on girls in his own family was sentenced Friday to 317 years to life in prison in Orange County, bringing a long-running molestation case with decades-old abuse to a close. The punishment was handed down at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana after a jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting two related girls, and authorities say the crimes reached across county lines.
Donald Charles Luther was convicted on Oct. 21, then returned to court to receive an aggregated 317-year term, with credit for 1,751 days already served, according to MyNewsLA. The sheer length of the sentence reflects how the court stacked the counts one after another rather than allowing them to run at the same time.
How the allegations surfaced
Prosecutors say the case cracked open in July 2021 during what should have been a routine wellness check. One victim disclosed to her doctor that Luther had molested her when she was between 5 and 9 years old while living with him in Dove Canyon, and her mother then reported the allegation to Orange County Sheriff’s deputies.
In court, that victim told jurors Luther molested her while he was babysitting and, in her words, “made her watch pornography.” Another victim testified that her own abuse occurred when she was roughly 11 to 13 years old in the early 1990s.
