What started as a pre-wedding Gerba at the Oklahoma City Convention Center on Friday night briefly turned into a severe-weather drill, then somehow ended up as a joint shelter party. When sirens went off, roughly 400 people - wedding guests and nearby volleyball players - were steered to the lower level to wait out a tornado warning.
Sirens sounded at about 8:30 p.m., and venue staff quickly moved the crowd downstairs, with the planner estimating the evacuation took roughly 10 to 15 minutes, according to KOCO. Sydney Ore of Weddings by Vara told the station, "We got almost 400 people evacuated out of that room ... to the first floor probably within about 10 to 15 minutes." The Convention Center then directed everyone to shelter in place while the National Weather Service tracked storms in the area.
Downstairs, the venue's volleyball courts pulled double duty as the shelter. Players from a tournament mingled with wedding guests, snapping photos and chanting for the couple as they all waited for the all-clear, as reported by KFOR. The station also noted that the planning team had prepared for rain, but not a tornado warning, and that once conditions were safe, staff passed out ice cream to guests.
How strangers turned shelter into celebration
Video and eyewitness accounts show volleyball players sprinting onto the court to hoist and cheer the couple, re-creating a silent Gerba while the music was paused. The bride called the scene "funny and beautiful," and the couple said their main wedding the following day went on as planned, per KOCO.
Why planning mattered
Organizers credited quick action and calm staff with preventing injuries during the warning and keeping the crowd orderly while emergency protocols were in motion. As KFOR noted, the episode is a pointed reminder that even the most joyful events need a clear emergency plan in tornado-prone regions.
The footage that spread online turned a frightening pause into a feel-good moment, but officials emphasize that the night ended well because people followed shelter instructions. If severe-weather warnings are issued, venues and guests are urged to follow staff directions and move to designated shelter areas immediately.
