Cambridge firefighters moved fast on Wednesday after a porch went up in flames at a 2.5-story wood-frame multi-residence on Garden Street, knocking down the fire before it could jump to neighboring units. Crews then stuck around to tear into walls and ceilings for overhaul while police kept the block clear of cars and curious onlookers. The blaze started on the front porch of the building's second floor and was contained there, according to the department, after multiple engine and ladder companies rolled in and other units were later sent back to service.
Fire Department Account And Response
According to the Cambridge Fire Department, Engines 9 and 1, Ladder 1, Squad 4 and Division 2 responded to the scene and were "overhauling at the scene" after knocking down the second-floor front porch fire. The post also listed "Incident Duty Group 3" as involved and noted that Cambridge Police officers were on hand to divert traffic and keep pedestrians out of harm's way. Fire officials identified the structure as a 2.5-story wood-frame multi-residence at 121 Garden St.
Garden Street Has Seen Major Blazes Before
Garden Street has hosted more serious fire activity in recent years. A three-alarm fire there in October 2023 required ladder rescues and sent two people to the hospital, as reported by Boston 25 News. Incidents like that are a reminder of why crews treat porch and exterior fires in older wood-frame buildings with such urgency.
What Residents And Commuters Should Expect
Per the department's Cambridge Fire Department post, other companies were released from the call as the core crews focused on overhaul and hunting for hidden hotspots, while police continued to manage traffic and pedestrian safety around the scene. Hoodline will update this item if fire investigators or city officials release additional information about cause or injuries.
