A routine Friday drive turned deadly in Miami Township on April 12 when Geanetta O'Brien, 55, of Miamisburg, was killed in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of State Route 741 and Austin Boulevard. Troopers and medics rushed to the scene in the early evening, shutting down the busy crossroads as investigators worked for hours to piece together what happened.
Crash details and investigation
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred around 5:45 p.m. O'Brien was driving north on SR-741 when she went through a red light and was hit by a vehicle heading east on Austin Boulevard, according to WLWT. The patrol said the other driver and a child in that vehicle suffered only minor injuries. Troopers from the Dayton Post are leading the investigation into the collision.
Coroner identifies victim
The Montgomery County Coroner's Office later confirmed that the victim was Geanetta O'Brien and said she died less than an hour after the crash at Kettering Health Main Campus, where she had been taken by Miami Valley Fire District medics, as reported by WHIO. Officials have not released further information about what might have led up to the impact.
Why this intersection matters
The meeting point of State Route 741 and Austin Boulevard sits in a fast-developing stretch of roadway that regional planners have been watching closely for years. An access-management study by the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission outlines a series of recommended signal and access changes along the SR-741 and Miamisburg-Springboro (Austin Pike) corridor to cut down on conflict points and boost safety, according to the MVRPC.
Investigation ongoing
State troopers from the Dayton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol continue to investigate the crash. No charges have been announced, and investigators have not said whether speed or impairment played any role, according to WLWT. Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash-cam video from the area around the time of the crash to contact investigators.
The Montgomery County Coroner's Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol are expected to release additional findings as the investigation moves forward. Our thoughts are with O'Brien's family and everyone affected by the crash.
