A quiet Thursday morning on Revere Beach Parkway turned chaotic when a truck barreled straight through the front of an Eastern Bank branch in Everett, tearing open a massive hole in the building and injuring two people. Debris littered the drive-thru lanes, the truck was left heavily mangled, and the branch, which was closed at the time, suddenly looked more like a construction site than a bank, as per the Boston Globe.
Officials and Response
The Everett Fire Department rushed to the scene after a 911 call came in around 7:30 a.m., Fire Chief Joseph Hickey told the Boston Globe. Two people were transported to nearby hospitals, and officials have not yet disclosed how seriously they were hurt.
How the Truck Moved Through the Building
The truck punched through the bank's front wall, smashed into the interior drive-thru counter, then continued on and burst out the side of the building into the parking-lot drive-thru lane, according to WCVB. An Everett police officer working a detail at the site stepped in quickly and helped pull the occupants from the vehicle before additional first responders arrived.
Cause Under Investigation
Fire officials said the driver appeared to have suffered a medical issue shortly before the crash, WHDH reported. State police said the cause of the crash is still under investigation, the Boston Globe added.
Local Context
Crashes involving heavy vehicles and buildings are unusual in Everett, but not unheard of. In January 2024, a dump truck struck a multi-family home and displaced several residents. Authorities have not yet released the names of those injured in Thursday's bank crash, and this story will be updated as officials share more information.
