Drivers on the Reagan Memorial Tollway ran into far more than the usual Monday slowdown when gunfire erupted on Interstate 88 near Keslinger Road in the Maple Park area, leaving one person shot and traffic crawling for miles during the afternoon rush.

Multiple lanes were shut down as police and emergency crews worked along the shoulder, squeezing vehicles into a single open lane in some stretches. The person struck by gunfire was taken to a hospital, and as of late Monday, officials had not released any information about a suspect.

What Officials Are Saying So Far

The DeKalb Fire Department told ABC7 Chicago the shooting happened near Keslinger Road and confirmed that the person struck by gunfire was transported to a hospital.

Chopper 7 aerial video captured officers working along the shoulder at about 4 p.m., according to the outlet, with several squad cars clustered near a vehicle. Investigators did not immediately provide any details about a possible suspect or a motive for the shooting.

Traffic Turmoil On I-88

The Illinois State Police issued a traffic advisory stating that all lanes of I-88 were shut down near Keslinger while investigators processed the scene. Eastbound lanes were later reopened, according to NBC Chicago.

NBC reported the closure was first logged around 3:15 p.m., with Sky 5 helicopter footage showing officers near a car on the shoulder as traffic inched by in the left lanes. The shutdown triggered heavy backups between Peace Road and Route 47 during the heart of the afternoon commute.

Investigation Still Active

Neither the DeKalb Fire Department nor the Illinois State Police immediately released the victim's condition or information about any suspects, officials said. State police urged drivers to steer clear of the area while the scene remained active and to brace for delays.
