Two people were killed Monday evening when a small single-engine plane went down in a field off Burchell Road near New Market, according to the New Market Fire Department. The wreckage landed between Lost Creek Road and Nances Ferry Road and set off a small brush fire that crews later knocked down. Firefighters and Jefferson County deputies secured the area and told neighbors to steer clear while first responders worked the scene.
New Market Fire Department Captain Sammy Solomon said both people on board died in the crash and that crews arrived to find wreckage and fire in the field. Officials said the single-engine aircraft had taken off earlier in the day from Knoxville's Island Home Airport.
