A 42-year-old man is clinging to life after a late-night stabbing in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood yesterday, according to police.

The attack was reported around 10:15 PM on the 400 block of Stevenson Street, a side street just off the main SoMa thoroughfares. Officers arrived to find the victim suffering from serious stab wounds, and he was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The suspected attacker, described by police as a man in his 40s, took off on foot before officers got there. Police said they immediately began canvassing the area, looking for witnesses and checking nearby buildings for security cameras that might have captured the assault or the suspect’s escape.

As reported by SFGATE, there was no immediate update on the victim’s condition as of this morning. Police offered only a limited description of the suspect and confirmed that no arrests had been made.

Per an SFPD news release, investigators are asking anyone with information to call the department’s tip line at (415) 575‑4444 or text TIP411, beginning the message with “SFPD.” Detectives are especially interested in any video recorded near the 400 block of Stevenson Street that could help piece together what led up to the stabbing.

SoMa safety concerns

The stabbing lands in the middle of ongoing anxiety over public safety in SoMa. In December, Hoodline covered a Sixth Street triple stabbing that sent three people to the hospital, rattled nearby businesses, and led to ramped-up patrols in the area.

Since then, residents and merchants have continued to call for a stronger, more visible police presence and have urged anyone who witnesses violence or captures it on camera to speak up.

The SFPD says the investigation into Monday’s attack remains active and ongoing, and again urged anyone with tips to call (415) 575‑4444. We will update this post if the police release further details.
