A late-night drive on a rural stretch of Connelly Springs Road turned deadly Friday when a Lenoir man’s car left the roadway and hit a tree, according to troopers. The single-vehicle crash happened just before midnight near Baton Church Road in the Granite Falls area. The driver, 39-year-old Roy Byrd, was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers said speed and impairment are believed to have contributed to the crash.

Crash details

According to WCCB Charlotte, troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Byrd was driving a 2013 Ford Taurus south on Connelly Springs Road at a high rate of speed when the vehicle crossed the center line, went off the road and struck a tree. Authorities put the time of the crash at about 11:50 p.m. Friday and said emergency crews responded to the scene.

As reported by WSOC-TV, Connelly Springs Road was shut down for roughly an hour while troopers reconstructed the crash. Investigators told the station that speed and suspected impairment were contributing factors.

Road and safety context

Connelly Springs Road (SR 1001) is a major connector in Caldwell County linking US-321 with nearby communities such as Baton and Granite Falls, according to NCDOT planning documents. State crash data from NCDOT show that rural two-lane roads account for a disproportionate share of speed-related fatalities, a trend officials often point to when urging drivers to slow down on county roads.

Troopers continue to investigate the collision and have not released additional details, according to WCCB Charlotte. Anyone with information is asked to contact the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
