Sunrise Boulevard safety and upgrades
Sunrise Boulevard has long been flagged as one of Broward County’s more dangerous stretches of roadway. A Broward MPO corridor review documented dozens of pedestrian and bicycle crashes and pointed to missing crosswalks, narrow sidewalks and poor lighting along the corridor that runs through Fort Lauderdale.
The Florida Department of Transportation is in the middle of a roughly $55.4 million S.R. 838/Sunrise Boulevard improvement project, which includes ramp widening, new LED lighting and a shared-use path. The work is aimed at reducing conflict points and improving visibility on the busy six-lane arterial, and those upgrades are scheduled to continue into 2029, transportation documents show.
Investigation underway
City investigators and emergency responders are examining the scene to determine how the two minivans collided and whether any drivers will face citations, per WPLG Local 10. Authorities have not released further details about the victims’ conditions.
Traffic on West Sunrise Boulevard was disrupted while rescue crews worked and investigators documented the wreckage. Officials had not issued any additional public updates as of the latest reports.
