A late-afternoon drive in the Ashton community turned violent Saturday when a 17-year-old boy was shot on Gibbs Road in St. Mary Parish, according to deputies. The teen was taken to a nearby hospital, and law enforcement says his injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Investigators say they are now looking for a dark-colored SUV and its driver in connection with the shooting.
What Deputies Say Happened
According to WBRZ, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office reports the shooting happened around 5 p.m. Saturday on Gibbs Road. Deputies found the 17-year-old at the scene and got him to a local medical facility for treatment.
Investigators told the outlet they believe a dark-colored SUV was involved and are actively trying to track down that vehicle and its driver.
How Neighbors Can Help
Deputies are urging residents in the Gibbs Road and Ashton area to check doorbell cameras and other security footage from Saturday afternoon for anything that might help the investigation.
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office lists phone tip lines and an online submit-a-tip option. Anyone with information can call 337-828-1960 or use the department's digital tip form. Officials say video from neighborhoods and community tips have been key tools in solving past cases.
Recent Violence In The Parish
The shooting fits into a troubling pattern of gun incidents in St. Mary Parish in recent months. For example, WAFB reported a deadly shooting on Bray Lane in May 2025, and KATC has regularly covered other shooting investigations across the parish.
Local law enforcement officials say footage from home security systems and quick calls from residents often make the difference in identifying vehicles and suspects.
The case remains an active investigation, and deputies say they will update the public as credible leads come in. Anyone who might have seen the SUV or heard or recorded anything unusual in the area Saturday afternoon is urged to contact the sheriff's office immediately.
