Federal marshals with the U.S. Marshals Service's Lone Star Fugitive Task Force arrested a person wanted on New Mexico warrants on Tuesday afternoon in a West El Paso neighborhood. Agents took the suspect into custody in the 6600 block of Isla del Rey Drive, near Ojo de Agua and Loma de Cristo drives, after executing an arrest warrant. Officials have not released the suspect’s identity while the investigation remains active.
Senior Inspector Mike Mijares, a U.S. Marshals Service spokesman, told the El Paso Times in an email that the person was wanted on "various criminal warrants" in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. Mijares said officials were withholding the suspect’s identity while investigators continued to gather information.
Lone Star Task Force Leads Regional Manhunts
The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force is a U.S. Marshals Service-led, multiagency unit that tracks and arrests fugitives across the Western District of Texas, including El Paso. According to the U.S. Marshals Service, the task force partners with local and federal agencies to locate and take into custody people wanted for serious crimes.
Where The Case May Go Next
Because the arrest arose from warrants issued in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, the person will likely be held locally pending transfer to New Mexico to face those charges. Federal law requires that when one state’s executive authority demands a fugitive, the state where the person is held must arrest and deliver them to the requesting state’s agent once the paperwork is in order, per 18 U.S.C. § 3182, as provided by Cornell Law School. The timing for transfer depends on whether New Mexico moves quickly to retrieve the suspect and file formal charges.
