El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies say a social-media video did more than collect clicks. It helped them track down 25-year-old Julian Ceasar Valdez, who was arrested in Las Cruces on April 8 after investigators spotted a clip that appeared to show him pointing a weapon at people near Pellicano Drive and Sunfire Boulevard.
Victims told investigators the encounter happened on April 5, when a man approached their vehicle, shouted, and pointed what they described as a weapon. Deputies obtained warrants charging Valdez with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and booked him into the Doña Ana County Detention Center, where he is waiting to be extradited to El Paso County.
How deputies say they tracked him down
According to KVIA, investigators reviewed the social-media clip of the confrontation near Pellicano Drive and Sunfire Boulevard, then used it to identify and contact the victims. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said the evidence supported two warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Deputies then coordinated with Las Cruces police, who located Valdez and took him into custody on April 8.
Viral footage’s growing role in regional investigations
Social-media footage has increasingly become part of the toolkit for local authorities, who use clips to build cases or generate leads that might not surface otherwise. As the Albuquerque Journal recently reported, widely shared videos in the Las Cruces area have affected how long investigations take and how certain cases are presented once they reach a courtroom.
What happens next
KVIA reports Valdez is being held in Las Cruces and is pending extradition back to El Paso County, where he is expected to face two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center, which Doña Ana County lists at 1850 Copper Loop in Las Cruces, per Doña Ana County. Court scheduling and bond information will be set after the extradition process and once the charges are formally filed in El Paso County.
