A quiet Wednesday in Wingate turned violent when a woman was stabbed multiple times in what deputies say was a domestic assault that nearly turned deadly. Her husband is now facing an attempted first-degree murder charge, and both were rushed to the hospital after the attack, according to local authorities.
Deputies with the Union County Sheriff's Office said they were dispatched to a reported physical disturbance at a home in the Wingate area on Wednesday. When they arrived, they found a woman suffering from multiple puncture wounds and determined she had been assaulted by her husband inside the residence.
According to the sheriff's office, the woman was airlifted to a local hospital for emergency treatment and is in stable condition. Investigators and crime scene personnel processed the home and collected evidence while medical crews worked on the victims.
The sheriff's office said deputies reached the scene in under three minutes and provided lifesaving aid to both the woman and the man. Authorities identified the husband as Augusto Rendon and said he had turned the knife on himself, sustaining a self-inflicted neck injury. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is charged with attempted first-degree murder. Once doctors clear him, he is expected to be moved to the Union County Detention Center.
Charges And Transport
Union County deputies say Rendon was arrested at the scene and remains under medical care under law enforcement watch. The sheriff's office said that after he is medically cleared, he will be booked into the Union County Detention Center, where he will await formal court proceedings on the attempted first-degree murder charge.
What The Charge Means Under State Law
Under North Carolina law, first-degree murder is classified as a Class A felony in N.C.G.S. § 14-17. State law also provides that an attempt to commit a felony is generally punished one class lower than the completed crime, as outlined in N.C.G.S. § 14-2.5. Those statutes frame how prosecutors and the courts will handle an attempted first-degree murder charge in cases like this.
Investigation Ongoing
Detectives and crime scene investigators spent hours at the Wingate residence gathering evidence and documenting the scene. The sheriff's office publicly thanked Union EMS, the Wingate Fire Department and responding deputies for their work on the call, and said the case remains active. More details are expected to be released as the investigation moves forward.
