Xero, the Wellington-based accounting software company, is coming back to the Bay. The firm has shifted its U.S. headquarters to San Mateo after several years with its Americas operations centered in Denver, sliding its main stateside hub closer to Silicon Valley customers, partners and major international flight connections.
As reported by the San Francisco Business Times, Xero announced the change today, pointing to San Francisco International Airport as a key draw because it serves as a gateway to the Pacific. The outlet notes the decision unwinds a years-old move that had established Denver as the company's Americas hub.
Xero is a New Zealand company led by CEO Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, according to Xero. The company's Xero offices page now lists a Bay Area location in San Mateo alongside its Denver and New York sites. Those corporate listings offer the clearest indication of where Xero is currently keeping staff and meeting space in the U.S.
Back to Denver and what changed
Xero originally shifted its U.S. headquarters to Denver in 2018, leasing space in the Circa building as part of a broader push into Colorado's tech scene. Unico Properties, which developed Circa, highlighted Xero as a marquee tenant when the building opened.
Local impact and what to watch
Xero has not publicly detailed how many U.S. roles might relocate with the headquarters move. Its offices directory still shows Denver and New York alongside the new San Mateo site, leaving open how much day-to-day headcount may actually shift versus simply being redistributed.
Local hiring and real estate watchers will be tracking whether Xero chooses to bulk up product, payments or customer-facing teams in the Bay Area or instead leans on San Mateo mainly as a regional headquarters for travel and meetings.
For Bay Area observers, the move underscores how corporate headquarters decisions remain in flux, as companies juggle market access and international travel needs against operating costs. Filings, leases and local job listings will be key signals for whether the San Mateo office grows into a larger piece of Xero's U.S. operations.
