A bicyclist was killed Sunday night after being hit on Alexander Love Highway near Blessed Hope Road in York County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Troopers said the crash happened just before 9 p.m. and left one person dead. Authorities have not released the victim's name and say the investigation is still underway.
According to WCNC, a sedan heading west on Alexander Love Highway struck a bicyclist who had been riding east and was attempting to make a turn. The collision happened near Blessed Hope Road, and troopers remained at the scene as they worked to piece together what led up to the crash.
Where it happened
Alexander Love Highway is a four-lane minor arterial with a two-way left-turn lane, a posted speed limit of 55 mph, and an average daily traffic volume of roughly 10,500 vehicles, according to a York County planning staff report tied to nearby rezoning. Those conditions add up to a fast, high-volume suburban corridor, which can significantly increase the risk to people on bicycles when a crash occurs.
State and national context for cyclist safety
State transportation officials have flagged rising pedestrian and bicyclist deaths as a serious concern. The South Carolina Department of Transportation cites federal data showing the state among those with higher-than-average pedestrian and bicyclist fatality rates. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has also highlighted how higher vehicle speeds sharply raise the chances a bicyclist will be killed in a collision, a risk that grows on 55-mph roads like this one.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate and has not released information about the driver or whether any charges are expected, WCNC reports. County planning documents also show ongoing rezoning and development activity near Blessed Hope Road, a reminder that traffic volumes along this stretch are likely to stay on the radar for local planners and safety advocates.
