Sodexo's education arm has cut 74 dining-service jobs tied to Young Harris College, abruptly thinning the ranks of campus food workers at the small North Georgia school, according to reporting Friday.
As reported by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the layoffs were made by SDH Education East LLC, a unit of French-based Sodexo. The Chronicle reported that 74 positions connected to dining services at Young Harris were eliminated on campus.
What Happened On Campus
Young Harris College, a small private institution in the North Georgia mountains, operates on a compact campus with a modern dining hall, according to the school's Quick Facts page. The college's website highlights a renovated Rollins Campus Center that includes indoor and outdoor seating and other campus amenities.
Dining at the college is handled through an outsourced contract with Sodexo, a setup that is common at institutions of this size. When those contracts change, staffing levels can follow, which is what appears to have happened here.
Broader Context
Sodexo's higher-education business has been under pressure in recent months. The company cut revenue guidance in 2025 after slower growth in its U.S. university operations, according to Bloomberg.
Contract shifts and closures have led to layoffs at other campuses as well. A Sodexo site in Decorah, Iowa, closed last year, and a WARN filing showed about 130 workers would be affected, as reported by KCRG.
Legal Note
Layoffs on this scale can trigger specific notice rules. The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act generally requires covered employers to provide 60 days' written notice before a plant closing or mass layoff, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Georgia also requires employers to file a Mass Separation Notice with the Georgia Department of Labor when 25 or more employees separate on the same day for the same reason. Forms and filing guidance are available from the state agency.
Details on severance, possible rehiring, or whether Young Harris College plans to switch dining providers were not included in the initial report. Young Harris College and Sodexo have not released a joint public statement about the staffing cuts; this story will be updated if either organization posts additional information.
