San Francisco is getting ready to hand over much of the city to Bay to Breakers next Sunday, May 17, as thousands of runners, costumed walkers and spectators stream from downtown to Ocean Beach. The first wave is set to leave at 8 AM, with the last wave not starting until 8:45 AM, and the race will squeeze traffic and transit across the city for several hours. Drivers and commuters should brace for limited crossing points, long detours and heavy crowds throughout the morning and into the early afternoon.
Start, Wave Times and Course Route
According to Bay to Breakers, all race distances start in the Embarcadero area at Howard Street and Fremont Street and finish at 1000 Great Highway near Ocean Beach. The organizer lists the first corral at 8:00 AM and the final corral at 8:45 AM, and notes that the course will be swept and closed by early afternoon. The route heads west through Hayes Valley, Golden Gate Park and the Sunset and Richmond neighborhoods before ending along the Great Highway.
Street Closures and Timelines
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency says setup closures for parts of downtown begin the evening before race day, with starting-area streets such as Howard, between Embarcadero and Beale, and Main, between Mission and Folsom, blocked through mid-morning on Sunday. On the west side, entrances to Golden Gate Park and stretches of the Great Highway will stay closed into the afternoon while crews clear the finish area. Local coverage, including KRON4, has compiled closure windows and suggested detours for drivers.
Transit Changes and Early Trains
BART will run limited-stop early trains that are scheduled to drop riders at Embarcadero around 7 AM; in the trip planner, the special runs are labeled "Limited Stop to Embarcadero." Caltrain is also operating northbound, limited-stop pre-race trains to bring Peninsula and South Bay participants to the start. Riders should expect crowded platforms and longer boarding times at hub stations that morning.
Muni Service and Travel Tips
The SFMTA says the Market Street subway will open at 6 AM, with limited station access at first, and that more than two dozen Muni routes will be rerouted or split while the course is closed. The agency will offer pre- and post-race express service and will sell special Muni fare stickers at the race expo and at the finish area to speed up boarding. Riders are encouraged to use Clipper or purchase fares in advance. If you are not taking part in the event, avoid the race corridor and arrange pickup or drop-off points several blocks from the closures.
Finish Line Festival and Getting Home
The family-friendly finish line festival will take over the Great Highway near the finish, with music, meet-ups and recovery stations set up around 1000 Great Highway. Organizers and transit officials warn that the finish area will remain busy into the early afternoon and that it may take extra time to get out of Ocean Beach after the race.
