A pre-dawn fire tore through a small commercial building on Trapelo Road in Belmont on Thursday, sending thick smoke over the neighborhood and leaving a well-loved ice cream spot badly damaged. Engines and ladder trucks crowded the street as neighbors looked on, watching firefighters attack heavy flames from outside after part of the floor gave way. Town officials said early Thursday that no injuries had been reported.
According to WCVB, the blaze broke out around 4:30 a.m. at Moozy's Ice Cream & Yogurt Emporium at 2 Trapelo Road and sent up smoke visible for blocks. Belmont Fire Department Chief David DeStefano told the station that the fire appeared to have started in the basement, and that crews were ordered out of the building after a section of the floor collapsed. WCVB reported that the response grew into a three-alarm operation as firefighters shifted to a defensive attack from the exterior.
Emergency Response And Safety
Belmont fire officials told WHDH that no one was hurt in the blaze, and crews stayed on scene to knock down lingering hot spots. Police kept a perimeter around the building while authorities evaluated the structural damage and the safety of the surrounding storefronts. As of early morning, officials had not announced when nearby blocks affected by smoke and water would fully reopen.
Damage To The Shop And Neighborhood
Moozy's, which reports it opened in 2012 and lists 2 Trapelo Road as its address, serves ice cream, frozen yogurt and light meals, according to Moozy's website. The shop sits in a row of small businesses in Belmont's town center, leaving neighboring merchants to face a tense morning as crews worked the scene and tried to keep the damage from spreading. Staff at Moozy's were not immediately available for comment, and town officials had not yet provided an official estimate of the loss.

According to WCVB, the cause of the fire remains under investigation, and officials said they plan to release more information as their work continues at the site. The Belmont Fire Department has not provided a damage estimate or a projected timeline for repairs.
