An 11-year-old boy was killed Tuesday morning when a trailer home went up in flames on the 12000 block of SW 84th Avenue in Bradford County, a rural stretch just outside Starke. Fire crews arrived to find the unit fully engulfed and, after knocking down the blaze, discovered remains believed to be those of a juvenile inside. Officials said the child had stayed home from school while his mother was at work in Gainesville; she has since been notified.
Bradford County Fire Rescue crews were dispatched shortly after 9:30 a.m. on reports of a camper fire at the same address and found the structure already consumed by flames when they pulled up, according to WCJB. Firefighters later located the body inside once the fire was out, and that outlet reports the child had not been in school that day.
Officials say investigation is under way
The Bradford County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it is investigating the deadly fire and said the boy’s mother has been notified and is staying with relatives, as reported by News4JAX. Authorities have not released the child’s name or said what sparked the blaze, and they noted that the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office will process the scene and examine the evidence.
Regional fire conditions add context
North Central Florida has been dealing with unusually dry weather and active wildfires in recent weeks, a backdrop that local officials say has pushed overall fire danger higher across the region, according to reporting by WUSF. Those conditions have strained firefighting resources and prompted repeated reminders about fire safety in rural areas and in neighborhoods with manufactured homes and campers.
Safety and next steps
Bradford County’s Fire Prevention office urges every household, including residents in manufactured homes and campers, to keep working smoke alarms, practice a family escape plan and call 911 immediately at the first sign of fire. The county posts additional guidance and resources on its fire prevention page. Investigators have not given a timeline for when they will release a cause of the fire, and the sheriff’s office is asking anyone who may have information to contact its tip line.
