The schnitzel clock is ticking in Bywater. Bratz Y'all, the German-inspired biergarten that helped put Piety Street on the map for late-night schnitzel and imported beer, will close its Bywater restaurant on May 31, owner Sven Vorkauf announced. After nine years in the neighborhood, Vorkauf said the decision was anything but easy and that he "gave my heart to this place." Neighbors and regulars are already bracing for the loss of one of the area's few family-friendly beer gardens.
According to NOLA.com, Vorkauf said landlords told him last week that the rent would increase and that an eviction notice had been posted in a back room in 2025. The outlet reported that Bratz Y'all, which first opened a brick-and-mortar in the Bywater in 2017, will finish service at the end of May.
From market stall to Bywater biergarten
Vorkauf first debuted Bratz Y'all as a food booth at local markets in 2012 before opening the Piety Street bistro in March 2017, according to Bratz Y'all and an early report from Eater New Orleans. City alcohol-license records also list the business at 617 Piety St Ste B under Vorkauf's name, confirming the location in municipal filings.

Vorkauf told NOLA.com that "the phoenix will come out of the ashes" and that, at 55, he "has to start all over again." He also referenced family health struggles, including his wife's breast cancer diagnosis and recovery, as part of the context for stepping away.

Over nearly a decade, Bratz Y'all built a loyal following for bratwurst sandwiches, Bavarian pretzels and its take on the NOLA Schnitzel, along with live music nights and a kid-and-dog-friendly courtyard. The restaurant has touted multiple Oak Street Po-Boy Festival awards on its site and in local coverage, cementing it as a regular presence on the city's festival circuit.
Final service dates
Bratz Y'all is scheduled to serve through Sunday, May 31, 2026, after which the Piety Street dining room and beer garden will close. Vorkauf's announcement left the door open for future projects, saying he intended to keep cooking even if he needs to start over somewhere else.
