
Police in Lawrence are investigating a deadly incident at a Canal Street apartment that left a woman dead and a 21-year-old man facing a murder charge early Saturday, May 23, 2026. Officers were called to the scene at about 3:18 a.m., where they found the victim suffering from a severe head wound.
What officials say
According to a press release from the Essex County District Attorney's Office, officers responded to a 911 call at an apartment at 240 Canal Street. They found the woman unresponsive, and she was taken to Merrimack Health Lawrence Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The District Attorney's Office identified 21-year-old Tyler Halley of Lawrence as the person charged with murder in connection with the woman’s death.
Arraignment set for Tuesday
Halley is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Lawrence District Court, as reported by Boston 25 News. The court is located at 2 Appleton St., according to Mass.gov.
Investigation underway
The Essex County District Attorney's Office says an active investigation is ongoing. Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the DA, members of the Lawrence Police Department and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are all involved in the case.
Prosecutors say no additional details will be released until after the arraignment. They also emphasized that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
