Late Thursday night in north Charlotte, a routine shift at Fire Headquarters turned chaotic when a car slammed through a side window of the building, injuring three people. Video from the scene showed the vehicle lodged in the wall while crews treated the wounded just outside. MEDIC told first responders the patients’ injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
What happened
According to WSOC, the crash happened just after 11 p.m. Thursday at Dalton Avenue and North Graham Street in north Charlotte. Channel 9’s video shows the car breaking through a side window of the fire department’s headquarters, with first responders quickly shifting from staffing the station to treating the injured. MEDIC indicated the three hurt in the crash are expected to be OK.
Where it happened
The City of Charlotte lists Fire Headquarters at 500 Dalton Ave, the complex that houses fire administration and public affairs, according to the City of Charlotte. The intersection itself has a rough track record. As WBTV reported last November, a multi vehicle wreck at Dalton and North Graham left two people seriously hurt.
Response and investigation
Channel 9 asked Charlotte police whether the driver in Thursday’s crash will face charges, but officers had not released any details about a possible criminal case, according to WSOC. Serious collisions typically fall to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit, and investigators are likely to review video and witness statements as they dig into what happened, per CMPD. By morning, there was still no official word on possible charges or how hard the hit was on the fire facility itself.
What’s next
The CMPD has previously said, “As further information develops, it will be released by CMPD’s Public Affairs Division,” and the department continues to ask anyone with information to contact detectives, according to CMPD. Local reporters and city officials say they are still pressing for comment from the fire department and city leaders as investigators sort through the wreckage and the timeline.
