A 29-year-old Boston man is accused of camping out in a women’s bathroom at Northeastern University, spying on an employee and then brawling with campus police who tracked him down nearby. Prosecutors say the suspect, identified as Brandon Awogboro, is a registered Level 2 sex offender who was already wearing an ankle GPS monitor at the time. He was arraigned this week in Boston Municipal Court and is scheduled to return later this month for a pretrial hearing.
According to Boston 25 News, Northeastern University police were called around 6:26 p.m. Wednesday after dining-hall workers at Stetson East reported that a man had been inside the women’s restroom for more than an hour. An alarm later went off when he used an emergency exit door. Staff told investigators the man craned his neck under a stall divider to peer into an occupied stall, and surveillance footage allegedly showed him walking out of the restroom and onto Huntington Avenue. When officers located him, prosecutors say he charged at an officer, was taken to the ground, thrashed and tried to bite, at one point putting his mouth on an officer’s holstered firearm.
Awogboro was arraigned on charges that include trespassing, assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Judge David Poole set bail at $500 and ordered him to stay away from both the reported victim and the location of the alleged offense. Poole also revoked bail in a pending Roxbury case and ordered continued GPS monitoring with an exclusion zone that bars him from Northeastern’s campus. Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden praised Northeastern police and cafeteria staff for acting quickly and said, “It isn’t difficult to imagine the shock and fear this employee must have experienced,” according to Boston 25 News.
Where The Arrest Took Place
The incident unfolded in Stetson East, a Northeastern residence hall whose dining area includes Levine Marketplace at 11 Speare Place, according to the university’s housing site. That dining hall opens onto Huntington Avenue, a busy stretch of the Fenway campus that sees regular foot traffic from students, staff and visitors. The housing page notes that Stetson East combines residential floors with a major dining facility, which helps explain why dining staff were the first to notice and report the suspicious behavior.
What "Level 2" Means
Under Massachusetts rules, a Level 2 sex offender classification signals a moderate risk of re-offense and a finding that the public should have access to registry information. Details on Level 2 and Level 3 offenders are available through local police departments or the Sex Offender Registry Board, and those classified at these levels must comply with reporting and monitoring requirements. State regulations outline how classifications are determined and how the public can obtain records, as described by Mass.gov.
Awogboro is due back in Boston Municipal Court on May 26 for a pretrial hearing. Northeastern students and staff with information or safety concerns can contact the Northeastern University Police Department; emergency and non-emergency numbers are posted on the NUPD site. This is a developing story and will be updated as additional court records and official statements become available.
