According to the Portland Police Bureau's Facebook post, North Precinct Neighborhood Response Team officers watched multiple hand-to-hand drug deals at the park, then pulled over a suspected dealer in a traffic stop. Officers say they seized more than 21 grams of crack cocaine packaged for sale, along with cash. The suspect was booked into jail on drug charges, although the post does not include a name or a case number.

North Precinct NRT missions like Tuesday's are part of a longer campaign to clamp down on drug activity around Dawson Park. In March 2025 the bureau carried out a warrant at a convenience store across the street that turned up drugs, firearms and cash, according to a Portland Police Bureau press release. Those investigations have zeroed in on the stretch of North Williams Avenue that borders the park.

Local coverage has tracked several coordinated crackdowns in the area. A March 2025 operation led to 26 arrests and about 100 charges, highlighting ongoing worries about open-air drug dealing and theft around Dawson Park, according to Hoodline. Business owners and neighbors have been pushing for a mix of enforcement and city services to tackle safety and livability concerns nearby.

Dawson Park, at North Stanton Street and North Williams Avenue, is a compact, historic green space with a playground, splash pad and a renovated basketball court that serves as a neighborhood hub, according to Portland Parks & Recreation. Residents say they want the park to stay family-friendly even as the city and police work to curb street-level drug activity just outside its borders.

The bureau's Facebook post notes that the suspect is currently booked into jail on drug charges, and for now that social post is the only public description of the arrest. Formal charging decisions will be made by the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office after prosecutors review the evidence. The office's policy manual says prosecutors weigh the strength of the evidence along with other factors when deciding whether to file charges.
