A Sunday drive near one of San Diego’s busiest trailheads turned tragic when a vehicle slammed into a tree on Navajo Road, killing one person and injuring several others, including a child and an infant, according to San Diego police.
The collision happened just before 11:40 a.m. on Navajo Road near Cowles Mountain. Emergency crews treated multiple passengers at the scene and took several people to nearby hospitals, among them a child and an infant.

San Diego police said the crash occurred in the 7500 block of Navajo Road. First responders shut down Navajo Road in both directions from Cowles Mountain Boulevard to Golfcrest Drive while crews worked the scene, a closure that was expected to last into the late afternoon as investigators documented the area, according to FOX 5 San Diego.

The wreck unfolded at the base of Cowles Mountain, a popular hiking destination where the main trailhead meets Navajo Road and Golfcrest Drive. Victims And Injuries
Authorities said multiple people were transported to hospitals, including the woman who was driving, a minor and an infant. One passenger suffered a severe laceration to his arm, and one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not yet publicly identified the person who died, according to FOX 5 San Diego.
