A pre-dawn drive on Interstate 35 turned tragic early Saturday when a 21-year-old Lone Grove woman was killed in a rollover crash on the southbound lanes in Carter County. The wreck happened just before 3 a.m. near mile marker 45, leaving the vehicle on its roof. Troopers identified the driver as Kylie N. Ward and said she was the only person in the car.
What troopers reported
According to KTEN, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol says Ward's vehicle departed the roadway to the left, overturned an unknown number of times and came to rest on its roof. Emergency crews pronounced Ward dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash, the patrol told reporters. Officials have released few additional details as they continue their investigation into how the rollover began.
Victim identified
As reported by KXII, troopers identified the driver as 21-year-old Kylie N. Ward of Lone Grove and said she was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck. The station says Ward was the only occupant and that next of kin have been notified. Investigators have not yet said whether impairment, speed or roadway conditions were factors.
Local trend and safety context
This is the second fatal I-35 incident in the Ardmore–Lone Grove area in recent weeks; Ardmore teen dies after a separate April crash in which a 19-year-old fell from a moving vehicle. Lap-and-shoulder belts reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat car occupants by about 45%, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Troopers and state safety officials point to enforcement campaigns such as Click It or Ticket to encourage belt use on stretches like I-35.
Investigation ongoing
Troopers said the crash remains under investigation and asked anyone with information to contact the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, according to KTEN. No charges have been announced and no other motorists were reported injured. This story will be updated as officials release more information.
