A deadly single-vehicle crash on I‑4 westbound near Lake Helen brought Friday afternoon traffic to a crawl in Volusia County, as troopers shut down lanes and rerouted drivers around a tangled scene near mile marker 114.
Crash details from troopers
The Florida Highway Patrol told WFTV the wreck happened around 1:49 p.m., when a 2021 Kia Soul traveling west on I‑4 veered off the roadway just west of Orange Camp Road and slammed into a utility pole. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers have not released the driver’s identity, and the investigation into what caused the car to leave the highway is still underway, with FHP investigators remaining on scene as of the latest update.
Traffic and detours
All westbound lanes were initially shut down, and traffic was detoured off the interstate at exit 114, according to WESH. By about 4 p.m., two of the westbound lanes had reopened, but the outside westbound lane stayed blocked while crews cleared debris and dealt with the damaged pole. Drivers moving through the DeLand and Lake Helen corridor were urged to build in extra time as the backups slowly eased.
Investigation and local context
FHP has not yet released a formal finding on what caused the crash, and the case remains an active investigation. That stretch of I‑4 has already seen several serious incidents this spring, including a mid-April multi-vehicle crash involving semi trucks that shut down lanes, according to WFTV, highlighting just how quickly traffic along the corridor can grind to a halt during peak hours. Local officials typically reroute motorists when cleanups drag on, and live traffic feeds remain the most reliable way to track changing conditions.
The fatal crash is still under investigation, and authorities have not released the driver’s name, WESH reported. Motorists are advised to keep an eye on local traffic reports for the latest as crews finish clearing the scene.
