Two people, the driver and a passenger on a motorcycle, were killed last night in a collision on the 7500 block of North Keystone Avenue, just south of the White River bridge in Indianapolis, police said. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the other vehicle stayed at the location, according to authorities. An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department captain was on site and was expected to share more information as investigators worked the crash scene.
As reported by WISH-TV, IMPD confirmed the motorcycle driver and passenger died at the scene. Officers remained in the area talking with witnesses and collecting evidence as traffic moved slowly past the taped-off stretch.
Where it happened
The crash took place on the 7500 block of North Keystone Avenue, a major north-south corridor that crosses the White River and funnels drivers into Indianapolis’ near-north neighborhoods. A separate fatal motorcycle crash on College Avenue in April highlighted what has felt like a rough stretch of months for motorcyclists in the city.
Investigation underway
IMPD crash investigators were on scene Sunday night, and the department said the driver of the other vehicle remained at the location while officers processed evidence. A captain at the scene was expected to brief reporters as the investigation moves forward, according to WISH-TV.
Helmet rules and safety
Indiana law requires riders under 18, as well as anyone on a motorcycle learner’s permit, to wear DOT-approved helmets. Adults with a full motorcycle endorsement are not required to wear helmets, according to the Indiana Code.
Federal research shows helmets significantly cut the risk of fatal and serious head injuries for motorcyclists, a point safety officials and advocates often stress after crashes like this one. National findings are detailed in reports from the NHTSA.
Officials have not released the victims’ names and have not announced any charges. Investigators asked anyone with information about the collision to contact IMPD. This story will be updated as authorities share additional details.
