A 42-year-old Federal Way man is dead after police say he was shot inside a home in the city's 31400 block of 40th Avenue Southwest on Friday morning, and investigators now have a suspect in custody. Spokane police arrested 42-year-old Daniel J. Bray over the weekend, then turned him over to Federal Way authorities. Bray is being held in the King County Jail while detectives continue their homicide investigation. Officials have not released the victim's name, and formal charges had not been filed at the time of reporting.
Shooting in Federal Way left man gravely wounded
Officers were called to the 31400 block of 40th Avenue Southwest shortly after 10:30 a.m. on May 1, where they found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. King County Medic One took him to Harborview Medical Center, where he later died, according to the Federal Way Mirror. Cmdr. Thaddeus Hodge told the Mirror that investigators believe the shooting was a targeted act of violence and that the department's Major Crime Scene Team processed the residence. Detectives say they are actively following leads and asked anyone with information to contact the department.
Spokane police locate and arrest suspect
The Spokane Police Department says its Special Investigations Unit, working with SWAT and air support, developed information that Daniel Bray was in the Spokane area and found him near 1200 N. Stevens just before noon on Saturday, May 2. Officers took him into custody without incident and turned him over to Federal Way investigators, according to a Spokane Police Department news release. The department said the operation involved SIU, SWAT and the Air Support Unit to ensure a safe arrest and transfer. Bray, 42, was then transported to be held by King County authorities while the Federal Way investigation continues.
Spokane officials had warned authorities to treat Bray as armed, and investigators told local reporters he had been involved in manufacturing unserialized rifles and was reportedly carrying a 9mm handgun when located, which shaped the department's tactical approach, per reporting by KHQ. Police have not publicly said whether a weapon was recovered or whether any firearms will be entered into evidence. The Spokane news release described the arrest as safe and without incident.
Federal Way police identified the suspect as a business associate of the victim, and FOX 13 Seattle reports that Bray was booked into the King County Jail on suspicion of murder. Formal charges had not been filed at the time of the reporting. Prosecutors typically review investigative files before deciding whether to charge in a homicide case, and detectives say the probe remains active. Authorities said they would release additional information when appropriate.
What investigators want from the public
Federal Way police and detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the department as they pursue leads, and Cmdr. Hodge described the incident as appearing to be targeted, the Federal Way Mirror reported. Officials say tips from residents could help detectives piece together a motive and clarify the connection between the victim and the suspect. Investigators plan to provide updates as the case moves forward.
