Dangerous mountain roads nearby
The network of mountain and desert roads around Julian has seen its share of serious wrecks in recent weeks and months, underscoring how remote, winding routes can turn a single mistake into a major emergency and complicate response times. In April, a crash on State Route 78 near Julian left two people dead and led to extended closures, according to East County Magazine.
How the crash will be probed
In cases of fatal or suspected serious-injury crashes on roads under its jurisdiction, the California Highway Patrol can call in its Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team, or MAIT, to conduct a more intensive reconstruction and technical review, per CHP policy. These teams typically gather physical evidence, interview witnesses and analyze vehicle data before releasing findings.
Officials have said updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Authorities plan to release the identities of those involved and details on the cause of the crash once the investigation progresses. Local law enforcement has asked anyone who saw the collision or its aftermath to contact authorities to help investigators piece together what happened.
