San Franciscans woke up to a classic gray start today with a cool marine layer parked over the city and temperatures lingering in the low 50s, about 53°F at the SFO observing site, and humid air near the bay. Forecasters expect the cloud deck to thin and burn off by late morning, trading the fog for mostly sunny skies and a high near 67°F this afternoon.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
A west-southwest breeze is expected to kick in this afternoon, generally 5 to 13 mph with gusts up to about 18 mph, strongest along the Embarcadero and through gap areas. According to the National Weather Service, Small Craft Advisories are in effect for parts of Monterey Bay and other coastal waters from this afternoon into the evening, so boaters should be ready for choppy seas and think twice about taking smaller vessels out.
Sunny Afternoons, Cool Mornings
The marine layer is expected to refill overnight, with lows around 51 to 53°F, setting up another cool start tomorrow morning. Temperatures should edge up over the weekend and into early next week, with highs near 72°F tomorrow, roughly 71°F next Monday, and mid-70s inland by next Wednesday, June 3, making afternoons comfortable for outdoor plans away from the immediate coast.
Plan Ahead
If you are headed to morning markets or waterfront events, a light layer will be your best friend early, with a windbreaker handy for the afternoon gusts.
