At approximately 9:26 p.m. on May 6, Holyoke police responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the area of 99 Suffolk St., according to a Facebook post by Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni. Officers arrived to find an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle near the intersection of Suffolk and Elm streets. The district attorney's office said the case is under active investigation.
Scene And Response
Once officers were able to get into the vehicle, they immediately began first aid before the victim was taken by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center, where he later died, Western Mass News reported. A spokesperson for the district attorney told reporters there is no known ongoing threat to the public.
Early Investigation
According to a preliminary investigation, the victim had been seated in his vehicle when an altercation involving multiple people broke out. Evidence, including witness accounts and surveillance footage, indicates the shooting may have stemmed from an attempted robbery, Boston 25 News reports. Investigators say the probe remains active as they work leads and continue reviewing footage.
The case is being handled by the Hampden District Attorney’s State Police Detective Unit, the district attorney’s murder unit and the Holyoke Police Department, according to the DA's Facebook post.
