An Athens-Clarke County police officer shot and killed an armed man in the 1000 block of Hull Road early Tuesday, May 12, 2026, after responding to reports of gunfire. Authorities said the man fired at least one shot before an officer hit him with return fire. No officers were reported injured.
Police say the first 911 calls came in around 12:43 a.m. with reports of multiple gunshots in the area. When officers arrived, they encountered a man holding a firearm. According to investigators, the man fired at least one round, an officer shot back, and the man later died. The officer has been placed on administrative leave while the case is reviewed, and state authorities are handling the criminal investigation, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Investigation and oversight
Under Athens-Clarke County policy, incidents involving deadly force trigger two separate reviews: a criminal investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and an internal review by the department’s Office of Professional Standards. Officers involved in shootings are typically placed on leave during those inquiries, according to Athens-Clarke County.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation maintains a public tracker of 2026 officer-involved shootings that outlines how the agency opens, documents, and follows these cases.
Hull Road history
Hull Road has been the backdrop for high-profile police encounters before. In 2019 an officer-involved shooting on Hull Road that left a man dead prompted a state investigation after officers said the man pointed a shotgun at them, according to reporting by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
What happens next
The GBI is expected to collect evidence, including any body camera footage and other recordings, and will compile a full case file. When its criminal investigation is complete, the agency will submit its findings to the district attorney, who will decide whether to pursue charges.
At the same time, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards will conduct its own administrative review. The officer remains on administrative leave while those reviews move forward, in line with department policy, according to Athens-Clarke County.
Police are asking anyone who was in the area around midnight, or who has video from Hull Road around the time of the shooting, to contact investigators through official channels. Local news outlets report they are continuing to seek additional details from the GBI as the investigation unfolds.
