A pre-dawn CTA bus run on the Northwest Side turned into a terrifying ride early Wednesday when a 57-year-old driver was allegedly held at knifepoint and forced to keep driving across the city. Despite the threat, police say the veteran operator stayed behind the wheel, steered the bus all the way to the Near North Side, then made a desperate escape out a window. Officers later arrested a man nearby, and no injuries were reported.

According to Chicago police, the ordeal began just before 2:40 a.m. in the 2400-block of North Pulaski Road in the Belmont Gardens neighborhood. A male passenger boarded the bus, pulled out a knife, and ordered the driver not to stop. With the suspect allegedly holding her hostage on her own route, the driver kept the bus moving.

Police say the bus continued all the way to the 900-block of North Clark Street, where the operator seized a narrow opening to get herself out of danger. She climbed out of a window to escape, while the suspect got off the bus. Officers soon tracked down a man in the 100-block of East Chestnut Street and took him into custody just before 3:20 a.m. Charges were still pending as of Wednesday morning, according to ABC7 Chicago.

Driver’s Escape Highlights Rising Transit Safety Fears

The driver’s quick thinking and window escape highlight just how vulnerable frontline transit workers can be, especially during overnight hours. Recent incidents, including a reported mob attack on South Side bus, have put a fresh spotlight on safety for both riders and CTA staff.

Police Investigation and What Comes Next

Detectives are now piecing together the timeline of the incident and working to determine the exact charges the suspect will face. Police say the man remained in custody following the early-morning arrest, and the investigation is ongoing, according to ABC7 Chicago.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
