Highway Heroes Rip Victims From Fiery Cave Creek Crash

A late-night drive on Carefree Highway turned into a rescue operation on Saturday when a violent two-vehicle collision north of Cave Creek left six people hospitalized and several victims trapped in burning wreckage. Passing drivers, suddenly thrust into first-responder roles, smashed through a truck’s sunroof to pull survivors out before firefighters could get there, and deputies shut down the busy corridor for hours while they worked the scene.

According to FOX 10 Phoenix, deputies reached the intersection of Carefree Highway and 12th Street just before 11 p.m. Saturday and found both a pickup and a sedan on fire. The outlet reported that six people were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to major.

Casey, who identified himself as a Marine, and his daughter Eliana Reinke told FOX 10 Phoenix they saw an explosion along the highway and pulled over to help, joining other Good Samaritans already scrambling at the crash site. “We believe that God puts us in a place where he needs us to be,” Eliana said, describing how the group broke through the truck’s sunroof and hauled several people out of the vehicle after it rolled onto its side.

Local officials told ABC15 that, as of Sunday morning, three of the six hospitalized patients were listed in critical condition. That count, attributed to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, came as medical teams across multiple hospitals continued treating a mix of burn and blunt-force injuries.

Crews from Arizona's Family who responded to the scene reported heavy fire damage and quoted Daisy Mountain Fire & Medical personnel who said four patients were in critical condition, a slight discrepancy from other outlets. Arizona's Family also noted that deputies closed Carefree Highway between 7th Street and 12th Street for several hours while detectives documented the crash and collected evidence.

Investigation Underway

Deputies told ABC15 the driver believed to have caused the collision is being investigated for possible impairment, although no arrests or formal charges had been announced. Investigators are asking anyone who may have video or other information to contact the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, which is leading the active investigation into what triggered the fiery crash.

Carefree Highway has already been on the radar in traffic studies for a pattern of serious wrecks.
