A 17-year-old accused of opening fire on Iowa City's downtown Pedestrian Mall and wounding five people in April has been arrested in metro Atlanta, authorities say. Damarian M. Jones was taken into custody Monday by the U.S. Marshals Service and is being held in the Clayton County jail while he awaits extradition to Iowa. The April 19 shooting struck three University of Iowa students and left one person in critical condition, according to police and university statements, and set off a weeks-long search that pulled in local, state and federal agencies.
According to the Iowa City Police Department, officers were dispatched around 1:45 a.m. on April 19 to the 100 block of East College Street after reports of a large fight. As they arrived, officers heard gunfire. Investigators say Jones joined the brawl, obtained a firearm from another person, then walked away during a lull in the fighting and fired six rounds into the crowded Pedestrian Mall, hitting five people. The city lists his charges as five counts of attempted murder, three counts of willful injury causing serious injury, two counts of willful injury causing bodily injury and going armed with intent.
On Monday, the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Jones in the Atlanta area, and he was booked into the Clayton County Jail, where officials say he is expected to be extradited to Iowa, per CBS Atlanta. Authorities had earlier identified several other persons of interest but said the victims did not appear to have been targeted or otherwise tied to the fight that preceded the gunfire. Local reporting noted that two victims required surgery and that one remained hospitalized in critical condition.
