A quiet stretch of southwest Joliet turned into an active crime scene Monday afternoon when a 13-year-old boy was shot inside a home on Market Street, leaving him in critical condition and rushed between two major trauma centers as doctors fought to save him.
Police Response At The Scene
Shortly before 5 p.m., officers were called to a report of a person shot in a home in the 400 block of Market Street, according to CBS Chicago. When officers went inside, they found the 13-year-old with a gunshot wound to his left shoulder. Police said they were working to piece together what led up to the shooting.
Victim's Condition And Hospital Transfer
Paramedics stabilized the boy and took him to Saint Joseph Medical Center in critical condition. He was later airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood for additional treatment, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Police said they believe the shooting took place inside the home and searched the surrounding area while detectives canvassed for witnesses. No arrests had been reported as of Monday night.
Investigation And How To Help
Joliet police are asking anyone with information or video from the area to contact the department’s Investigations Division at 815-724-3020, or to submit anonymous tips to Will County Crime Stoppers at 800-323-6734 or online at crimestoppersofwillcounty.org, per CBS Chicago. Police have not released the victim’s name, and detectives said they are continuing to follow leads.
Local Context
This latest shooting comes amid a troubling run of violence involving teens in Joliet. In April, three teenagers were found shot near a suburban home in what police called a “targeted incident,” leaving two of them critically wounded, NBC Chicago reported. Those victims were also taken to Saint Joseph and Loyola hospitals, underscoring how often the same trauma centers are treating seriously injured young people and how frequently investigators are again asking the community for any video or tips.
Joliet police said the investigation into Monday’s shooting remains active and are urging neighbors to check any home cameras and share footage that could help. We will update this story as authorities release more information.
