A Knoxville bicyclist is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after an SUV struck the rider just before midnight Saturday on North Cherry Street near I-40, according to the Knoxville Police Department. Officers and crash investigators shut down the road and worked the scene into the early morning hours while they collected evidence.
According to WBIR, the collision happened shortly before midnight on May 9, and North Cherry Street remained closed until about 2 a.m. Sunday as investigators cleared the area. The station reported that the person on the bicycle was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and that the crash is still under active investigation.
Cherry Street And I-40 Have Seen Brutal Wrecks Lately
The stretch where Cherry Street meets I-40 has been the backdrop for other serious crashes in recent weeks. A motorcycle wreck on I-40 West near Cherry Street on April 18 left a 16-year-old with catastrophic injuries, including the loss of both feet, according to WVLT, reinforcing long-running worries about safety along that corridor.
Police Tight-Lipped As Traffic Investigators Dig In
KPD said the bicycle crash remains under investigation and has not released the names of anyone involved. WBIR reported that the vehicle was an SUV and that officers were still working the scene early Sunday morning.
