A late-night crash on Meadowbrook Expressway left a woman in critical condition Tuesday after she was struck by a vehicle in South Salt Lake. The collision happened around 10:30 p.m., and the woman, described by officials as an adult in her 30s or 40s, was taken by ground ambulance to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Crews shut down part of the expressway near 700 West for several hours while investigators processed the scene. Police say the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
Officials and the On-Scene Response
Shaun Ward of the South Salt Lake Police Department told ABC4 Utah that the pedestrian was struck while crossing the roadway near 700 W Meadowbrook Expressway and that the department’s major crash reconstruction team responded to the scene. According to ABC4 Utah, officers closed Meadowbrook Expressway near 700 W while they collected evidence and worked to reconstruct what happened. Investigators have not released the victim’s name, and they say the inquiry remains active.
Pedestrian Safety at Meadowbrook
City planning documents have long flagged Meadowbrook and nearby corridors as tough territory for people on foot, citing heavy traffic volumes and relatively few controlled crossings, according to South Salt Lake's mobility plan. That plan lays out proposed crossings, trail connections, and traffic-calming measures that officials say will require coordination with state agencies. Local advocates and city staff have pointed to those infrastructure gaps in past public meetings as part of broader efforts to reduce auto-pedestrian collisions.
What Investigators Are Asking
Police are asking anyone with information or video of the crash to contact the South Salt Lake Police Department, ABC4 Utah reported. Meadowbrook Expressway remained closed in the area for hours while crews completed their work at the scene. Authorities have not yet said whether any charges will be filed as the investigation continues.
