Chicago police on May 27, 2026 released new surveillance images and are asking the public to help identify a person and a light-colored SUV tied to an Aug. 25, 2024 homicide in Logan Square. The early morning shooting on the 1700 block of North Harding Avenue left a 32-year-old man dead and two others wounded, investigators said, and detectives are hoping the fresh images will finally shake loose a crucial tip.
Surveillance shows person near light-colored SUV
The newly released surveillance footage shows an individual seen with a light-colored SUV that investigators believe is connected to the killing, and detectives say they are counting on viewers to pay close attention. Police are asking anyone who recognizes the vehicle or the person in the footage to come forward, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
What happened the night of the killing
Police said the shooting unfolded in the early hours of Aug. 25, 2024, when people standing on the 1700 block of North Harding Avenue were hit by gunfire. A 32-year-old man was shot in the head and later died at Mount Sinai Hospital; a 19-year-old man was wounded in the back, and a woman suffered minor injuries from broken glass, according to ABC7 Chicago.
The Cook County Medical Examiner later identified the man who was killed as 32-year-old Joel Cardenas, and police say no arrests have been reported in the case. Investigators have asked the public to submit an anonymous tip at CPDTIP.com using reference number JH401002 or to contact Area Five detectives at 312-746-6554 with any information, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
Why detectives are re-circulating images
Re-circulating still images is a tactic CPD has turned to before when cases stall; prior releases of surveillance footage have led to tips that helped narrow down leads in other neighborhood homicides. The renewed public appeal in this case comes nearly 21 months after the Aug. 25, 2024 shooting, underscoring how investigators will go back to unsolved files when fresh public attention or information might help, per past reporting such as WTTW.
How to pass along tips and evidence
People with video, photos or other information linked to the case can submit an anonymous tip through the Chicago Police Department’s online portal or text CPDTip to 738477 to receive a link to the form, which allows users to upload files for detectives to review. The department notes that every tip is reviewed by CPD staff and routed to the appropriate investigative unit for follow-up, according to the Chicago Police Department.
