A fierce midday fire ripped through a low, mixed-use building in Brighton Park on Thursday, sending a thick plume of smoke across the Southwest Side and pulling multiple engine companies into an intense street-side firefight. Neighbors clustered across the street, watching as firefighters moved fast to knock back the flames.
The Chicago Fire Department said the blaze was reported at 2601 W. Pope John Paul II Drive at 12:59 p.m., and that crews elevated the call to a still-and-box alarm to bring in extra equipment and manpower, according to CBS Chicago. Officials did not immediately say whether anyone was hurt, and crews stayed on the scene into the afternoon.
A department photo showed a massive surge of smoke blasting skyward, and dispatch logs referenced a possible hoarding situation at the address, though the Fire Department did not confirm that detail, CBS Chicago reported. The outlet published department images that show items piled high behind the building.
Where it happened
The building sits on the southwest corner of Pope John Paul II Drive and Rockwell Avenue. Pope John Paul II Drive is the local name for 43rd Street between Kedzie and Western. The structure appears to include a ground-floor storefront with apartments above, right across from James Shields Elementary School at 4250 S. Rockwell Street, according to the school's information page; Shields Elementary lists the school on Rockwell just north of the 43rd Street corridor.
Why hoarding matters to crews
Reports of a possible hoarding situation drew attention because heavy clutter can sharply increase both the intensity of a fire and the danger to residents and first responders, according to the National Fire Protection Association; NFPA notes that blocked exits and extra fuel load complicate evacuation and search-and-rescue efforts. Federal reviews of firefighter fatalities have similarly flagged hoarded or cluttered interiors as a serious hazard that can hide escape routes and increase collapse risk, according to a NIOSH/CDC report; NIOSH/CDC.
There were no confirmed reports of injuries late Thursday. Authorities have not released a cause and asked anyone with information to contact Area 1 detectives, and local crews remained on scene while investigators worked through the afternoon.
