Afternoon traffic near a busy stretch of Ponce de Leon Avenue was interrupted by gunfire Thursday, as Atlanta police responded to a reported shooting at the Shell station at 486 Ponce De Leon Ave NE, across from the Chick-fil-A in Midtown.
A nearby worker told reporters they heard a single gunshot before officers rushed in. According to police, one person did not wait for an ambulance and instead drove themselves to a hospital. Their condition has not yet been released, and investigators have not identified a suspect.
What happened
As reported by Atlanta News First, the shooting was called in around 4 p.m. near the Shell gas station at 486 Ponce De Leon Ave NE. The outlet cites a worker in the area who said they heard one gunshot before officers arrived on scene.
Atlanta police told the station that one person involved in the incident drove themselves to a hospital. Investigators had not released any suspect information as of Thursday afternoon.
Where this fits
This is not the first recent scare along Ponce. Earlier this month, gunfire ripping through a rideshare shattered that vehicle’s windows. Officers recovered a rifle and shell casings in that May 18 episode, which has already left many Midtown residents and drivers on edge.
Those incidents have prompted police to urge the public to share any video or information that might help detectives piece together what is happening along this busy corridor.
