A man in his 60s was found dead Monday morning in the parking lot of UMass Memorial Marlborough Hospital, according to Marlborough police. Officers responding to a 911 call determined the man had suffered a gunshot wound, and city, state and county investigators converged on the scene to begin a death investigation.
Police Remained at the Scene Into the Morning
Officers arrived after a 911 caller reported a person in the hospital parking lot, and detectives remained on scene into the morning as they documented evidence, MetroWest Daily News reported. The outlet said the call came in at about 6:39 a.m. and noted that police had not released the victim’s name as of Monday.
Investigators are treating the case as a death investigation while they work to piece together what happened in the hospital lot so early in the day.
Hospital Informed Staff, Said Campus Was Safe
In an email to employees, UMass Memorial told staff there would be “an increased police presence” in the parking lot while officers and detectives continued their work, Boston 25 News reported. According to the station, police also said there was no ongoing threat to the public as the investigation unfolded.
What Investigators Said
Marlborough Police Chief David Giorgi told Patch the man was discovered inside a vehicle outside 157 Union St. and that “no foul play is suspected at this time.” Officials have not released details about how the gunshot wound occurred or whether there are any persons of interest.
The case remains under investigation and authorities have not publicly identified the victim. Officials from the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office and the Massachusetts State Police are assisting Marlborough detectives, according to Boston 25 News.
