A juvenile court hearing for the 16-year-old accused in the deadly Shelby Farms Park shooting was pushed back Monday after his new defense attorney asked for more time to get up to speed on the case. The April 14 shooting at an unsanctioned “senior skip day” gathering left a Millington teen dead and has sent waves of grief through families and schools across the area. The judge has reset the case for early June.

Hearing Paused After New Counsel Steps In

In a brief appearance, Juvenile Court Judge Tarik Sugarmon continued the probable cause hearing after the defense requested additional time to review investigative interviews and other evidence, according to WREG. Southaven attorney John Keith Perry has taken over from Memphis lawyer Arthur Horne as the teen’s counsel, the station reported, and Perry was not present at Monday’s hearing. The judge rescheduled the hearing for June 1 at 9 a.m.

Arrest, Charges And What Happened At The Park

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office arrested the 16-year-old on April 17. Prosecutors have charged him with first-degree murder, criminal attempted first-degree murder, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and three counts of aggravated assault, according to Action News 5.

Deputies say the shooting started after what began as a water-gun fight near the Woodland Discovery Playground area of Shelby Farms Park. One of the bullets struck 17-year-old Coriuan Bean, who later died.

Family Remembers Coriuan Bean

Bean’s family held a homegoing ceremony over the weekend and described him as a church-going teen who had been making plans for prom. Relatives told local reporters they are still trying to process the loss, WLBT reported.

Classmates and community members have organized vigils and urged anyone with video from the gathering to come forward. The shooting has also prompted some schools and student groups to rethink unsanctioned events like the one at Shelby Farms.

Legal Implications For Juvenile Court

The upcoming preliminary hearing will determine whether there is probable cause on the murder charge and allow prosecutors to argue that the case should be transferred to criminal court for adult prosecution, a move that would change how the teen is tried and what penalties he could face, according to WREG.

While the transfer decision follows specific legal standards, the teen remains in custody at the Shelby County Youth Justice and Education Center as the court weighs its next steps.

Community Response And Ongoing Investigation

Authorities estimate that more than 200 students attended the unsanctioned gathering, and law enforcement is still collecting cellphone video and witness statements to reconstruct what led up to the shooting, according to Action News 5.

Investigators have asked anyone who was at Shelby Farms that afternoon to share footage or information with the sheriff’s office as they continue to build the case.

The next juvenile court session is set for June 1 at 9 a.m., and the community will be watching to see whether prosecutors push for a transfer to adult court. Sheriff’s investigators continue to seek public help, urging anyone with relevant footage or information to contact them through official channels.
