Cambridge police say a 39-year-old Somerville resident, Kyle Evans, was arrested Monday morning near Rindge Avenue and Alewife Brook Parkway after officers recognized him and moved in to take him into custody on active warrants. According to police, Evans allegedly tried to bolt and then violently resisted, kicking officers as they worked to detain him. During the struggle, a loaded magazine allegedly fell from his person. Officers say they later recovered a loaded .45-caliber handgun, a brown substance suspected to be heroin or fentanyl, and two fraudulent identification cards. Evans was arraigned in Cambridge District Court on multiple charges.
According to a Cambridge Police Department news post, patrol officers assigned to North Cambridge spotted Evans shortly after 8 a.m. and, knowing he had active warrants from courts in Boston and Rhode Island, moved to arrest him. Police say he "violently resisted" and that a good samaritan, along with backup units, assisted officers in getting him into custody. A search incident to arrest, the department reports, turned up the handgun, the suspected narcotics and the two fraudulent IDs, and officers say Evans does not have a license to carry a firearm.
Evans was arraigned in Cambridge District Court on counts that include assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, possession of a Class A substance, possession of a firearm and ammunition, resisting arrest and outstanding warrants. Prosecutors from the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office will handle the case, according to police. The department also shared its account on Facebook, with the original post linked in the embed above.
Context and community response
The arrest unfolded on what was already a tense Monday for Cambridge police. Earlier that afternoon, a separate shooting on Memorial Drive wounded two people and prompted a large multiagency response, according to local reporting. Cambridge Police have scheduled a community debrief for May 19 to review the response and share resources with residents.
Charges and next steps
Evans faces a combination of felony and other charges that will proceed through Cambridge District Court as prosecutors review the case. Police and the district attorney’s office say they are open to receiving tips or footage from the public that may relate to either the Memorial Drive shooting or the North Cambridge arrest.
