A day on the water turned terrifying north of Olympia's Boston Harbor when a larger boat slammed into a smaller vessel, ran over its lone occupant and then took off, according to authorities. The collision left the victim in the water with severe injuries that investigators say could be permanent. Boaters at a nearby marina rushed in, pulled the injured person from the water and provided lifesaving aid until deputies arrived.
According to KING5, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrested the operator of the larger vessel on suspicion of assault by watercraft. Witnesses described the operator’s actions as reckless, and detectives have gathered video and spoken with multiple people who were on the water when it all unfolded. Officials have not released the suspect’s name.
Rescue On The Water And Community Outcry
In a Facebook post that later surfaced on Reddit, Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders publicly thanked the boaters who raced out from the nearby marina to help. Deputies said the victim was somehow still treading water despite serious injuries, and that the quick thinking of those witnesses likely kept a bad situation from turning fatal.
Community members have been sharing photos and video from the scene, and investigators say they are reviewing that material as part of the case. What started as a terrifying few minutes on the water has now turned into a very public search for answers and accountability.
Investigation And Arrest
Detectives canvassed the area, went through video clips and interviewed witnesses before taking the boat operator into custody, according to the sheriff’s post shared on Reddit. Per KING5, deputies said the larger boat initially left the scene, only to circle back a short time later.
The injured person was rushed to a hospital with what officials described as substantial injuries. Authorities have said those injuries may lead to permanent disfigurement, which raises the stakes for everyone involved as prosecutors review the case.
What “Assault By Watercraft” Means
Under Washington law, “assault by watercraft” comes into play when someone operates a boat either recklessly or while under the influence and causes serious bodily harm. The charge can be filed as a class B felony. The Revised Code of Washington defines “serious bodily injury” as including a substantial risk of death, serious permanent disfigurement or long-term loss or impairment of a body part or organ, all of which can trigger steep criminal penalties.
