
Authorities in Poteet say a confrontation at a small city park spiraled into a full-on arrest drama Thursday, after an elderly man was allegedly beaten and the suspected attacker later tried to square up with deputies at his home.
Police report that the suspect repeatedly struck the older man at Canyon Park, continuing to hit him even after he had fallen to the ground. Officers on scene provided medical aid to the injured man, then followed leads that took them to the suspect’s residence, where things reportedly escalated into a faceoff with law enforcement.
According to WOAI, deputies identified the suspect as Roger Garza and say he challenged officers to a physical fight when they arrived at his home. Deputies told the outlet they took Garza to the ground and handcuffed him before transporting him to the Atascosa County Jail. Authorities have not released the victim’s condition or the specific charges Garza may face.

The alleged assault took place at Canyon Park, a small city park in Poteet. The City of Poteet’s FAQ lists the park at 785 8th St and notes it is used for community events and pavilion rentals, with posted daily hours available on the city’s site.
Police response and booking
Officers say they rendered aid at the scene before tracking the suspect to his home and taking him into custody. The Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office identifies the county jail in Jourdanton as the booking facility and publishes public notices on its official website and Facebook page. WOAI reports Garza remained in custody at the county jail Thursday night.
