A quiet Friday morning at a Milford public-housing complex turned deadly when a 54-year-old Medway man was fatally assaulted, officials said. Police were called to the Birmingham Court apartments after a 911 caller reported a past assault, and the victim was rushed to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he later died. Another man was taken into custody at the scene, and investigators say their work is still very much underway.
Victim Identified as Medway Man
The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office identified the victim as 54-year-old Michael Albro of Medway, according to Boston 25 News. Officials say officers were called to Birmingham Court around 10:30 a.m. after the 911 call. Milford police asked non-residents to avoid the area while detectives worked the scene, NBC10 Boston reported. Authorities have not released the name of the man who was taken into custody.
Neighbors Recall Pre-Dawn Screams
Residents say things started going sideways well before the police cruisers rolled in. Neighbors told investigators they heard screaming before dawn and later watched as officers flooded the second-floor units, WCVB reported.
"One guy was threatening the other that he was going to bash his head in," neighbor Corey Thomson told the station. WCVB noted that Birmingham Court, tucked off Summer Street, is a Milford Housing Authority property that serves seniors and people with disabilities, a place neighbors say is usually far quieter than it was on Friday morning.
Active Investigation and Upcoming Arraignment
Milford police and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office are leading the investigation, officials said. The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, is expected to be arraigned on Monday, according to Boston 25 News. Prosecutors and police say they plan to release more information at that arraignment and as they continue to sort out what happened in the hours before Albro’s death.
How to Share Information
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call the Milford Police confidential tip line at (508) 473-3800, Newport Dispatch reported. Officials say there is no known ongoing threat to the public, even as detectives keep working to piece together the events that led to the deadly confrontation.
