Route 66 is getting top billing at the Oklahoma State Fair in 2026, with organizers locking in "The Midway of the Mother Road" as the fair's official theme. The run is set for Sept. 17–27, 2026, at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, where fair planners say the historic highway will shape the look and feel of rides, exhibits and special programming.
In a news release announcing the theme, Oklahoma State Fair spokesperson Scott Munz framed the choice as a tribute to the spirit of traveling the famed highway. "Route 66 was never about just getting somewhere, it was and continues to be about what you can find along the way," he said, according to KOCO. The release notes that the 2026 fair will feature Route 66 themed events and attractions that celebrate Americana and local Route 66 heritage, with specific event announcements to be rolled out in the coming months.
Route 66's Oklahoma footprint
Oklahoma contains more drivable miles of historic Route 66 than any other state, roughly 400 miles, and state officials have spent the last several years refreshing signs, public art and other centennial projects to guide visitors. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation says those efforts are designed to spotlight preserved segments, neon signs and roadside attractions along the Mother Road.
What fairgoers can expect
The Oklahoma State Fair's official pages list carnival rides, the Chickasaw Country Entertainment stage and dozens of exhibitions that will serve as the backdrop for the Route 66 programming. OK State Fair notes that the carnival has been a staple for more than a century, and organizers plan to weave Route 66 history and art through the midway, exhibitions and special events.
A year of centennial events
The fair's theme is timed to sync with a broader slate of Route 66 centennial celebrations across the state, including the Kickin' It on 66 OKC festival at Scissortail Park on May 30, which combines parades, a travel hub, a concert and a drone show. Kickin' It on 66 and its tourism partners have posted a calendar of car cruises, museum exhibits and public art dedications aimed at drawing visitors throughout 2026. The fair's Route 66 programming is being positioned as part of that larger push to revive roadside attractions and boost tourism across Oklahoma.
Fair officials say they will announce performer lineups, exhibit details and ticket information in the coming months, with official updates to appear on the Oklahoma State Fair website and the fair's social channels. OK State Fair is encouraging fans to sign up for its mailing list to stay informed.
